Our Mission

The Mission of the North Tonawanda Public Library is to continually assure access to a diversity of ideas, resources and services to meet the informational, educational and recreational needs of the community in a safe and comfortable environment.

History

Chartered in 1893 as a school district library, the North Tonawanda Public Library was initially located in the now demolished Goundry School #1. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie’s gift of $20,000 in 1904 funded the Library’s second home at 240 Goundry St. Crowded conditions in the Carnegie building prompted the opening of the Library’s third and present location on Meadow Drive in 1975. The former Carnegie Library is now an art gallery.

More About Johnny

Occupation
I am currently a Senior Support Specialist for Instructional Technology at Buffalo State University located in Butler Library. My mission is to assist faculty, students, and staff with their IT issues as well as training and supporting student support workers at the Help Desk. I have been with the University for 25 years, and I hope I have another 25 in me.

What Hobbies or pastimes do you enjoy?
I enjoy painting on canvas/board with oils and acrylics and I travel, teaching painting and hobby workshops within the Historical Miniature Gaming Society Hobby University. I enjoy tabletop gaming and video games. I am also a Freemason involved with several of the concordant bodies. I support and work with The Battle Within, which deals with veteran PTSD and suicide prevention. I also enjoy gardening, aquaculture, and bird watching.

For how many years have you served as a Trustee for the Library?
None yet, I’m hopeful for my first term.

What do you enjoy most about serving as a Library Trustee?
I have yet to join the board, but I am excited to able to serve the library which served me since I was a small child.

What do you feel is the most challenging aspect of serving as a Library Trustee?
As I haven’t served yet, I can’t quantitatively say–but I would imagine first learning the ins and outs of the needs of the Library and the community and then being a good steward of the resources while maintaining a fiduciary responsibility to the Library.

What is your favorite thing about the North Tonawanda Public Library?
I can’t pick one thing, but ever since I have been a child I’ve loved that the Library has been the center of community life, providing resources for the the community they might otherwise not have access to. It really is all about the people, those who work there, and those who use the resources.

What is your favorite thing about North Tonawanda?
I grew up in NT and have lots of fond memories– I lived in Buffalo for a few decades and then moved back to NT to be close to family. There is much I love about the city from the mature trees to the history–but if I had to pick one thing, we are a little town with a BIG heart.
